I have a Spectrum Magnum Power Pack (item no. 44-6681) that was the original for my 23 year old On30 train set. I just purchased a Spectrum On30 2-6-0 sound module for my new steam locomotive and DCC equipped tender (item no. 29303). Is the original power pack ok to use with the new or must I purchase a newer power pack. TY for your help.
The power pack is fine, but check the manual for the new loco to verify it will run on DC. I think the new dcc stuff will run on dc but not sure.
If it will run on dc, it will take more voltage to fire up the decoder before it starts moving, and I don't know how much (or, any) control over the sounds you'll have. It will just provide the basic sounds like chuff, brake squeal, etc but you will have limited (or no) control of stuff like the bell and whistle.
You may want to switch over to DCC to get full functionality.
In general, it takes at least 5 volts on the rails with a DC power pack before a DCC equiped loco will even start moving. While a straight DC loco will be moving at a fairly good clip at that voltage.
