Since this is a Bachmann forum, all I can suggest is to program on the main.
I have done it with my NCE system once I did the initial program track stuff if I wanted a new engine number. Just no other loco on the main. Your manual will give you instructions.

Here is a good Good Group for Digitrax users.

Digitrax systems have trouble reading Lenz type decoders like Bachmann. The solution is simple. Set yourself up a programming track using a couple of sections of track connected to the programming leads of your command station. Then, you connect a 1000 ohm resistor across the rails of the programming track. I modified my resistor by soldering alligator clips to the ends of the leads so that i could remove it when not needed.

With this setup you should be able to reprogram the decoder according to your user manual. What system are you using?
