Title: Decoder for Athern GP38-2
Post by: dbqfan on May 19, 2012, 04:01:00 PM
I have a Athern GP38-2 engine. I am planning on buying a Bachmann EZ Command DCC unit. I would like to know what decoder will fit my Athern GP38-2. I would like DCC control and if possible sound also.  Thanks for the help as I am new to DCC and do not know much.

digitrax makes decoders and wiring harnesses specifically for athearn locomotives.

dh123at is the basic decoder.

dh163at or dh165 at is the premium decoder with back emf (a form of cruise control).....

I would go for the Dynamis, much more CV control for most non sound and sound locos.

Below is a link about the SoundTraxx decoders..

SoundTraxx also sells a very good non sound decoder.

Bachmann uses the Tsunami for their sound locos.

I, too, would go for the Dynamis system or another entry-level
system which will give you much more power and control than
the EZCommand.
