A Digitrax DZ-123 is perfect. Has just been replaced with the DZ-125
Has to be wired in as there is no plug.
2 caps must be removed.

The DZ-125 decoder has more features, such as "Scaleable Speed Stabilization-BEMF, Transponding, SuperSonic, SoundBug Compatible".

DZ-123 is still available as a cost effective tiny decoder.

are  the de-coders in the bachmann ft-a and the gp-40 basic de-coders.and can they be tweaked

If you're asking if it makes a DC locomotive operate as a DCC locomoive then yes, that's it's basic function.  It can be "tweaked" - - you can change CV values.  If you mean does it add Sound and DCC the answer is no.
