Since I majored in math, I was a bit hesitant to reply to this thread. However, I might add a comment, that I hope you and others don't take as condescending.

As long as the run and rise are in matching units of measure (inches, feet, yards, etc), then as already mentioned dividing the rise by the run will give you a decimal, not the actual percent.

Say you have 1" rise over 36" run, that would be 1/36= .0278.  To translate that to percent, simply move the decimal point 2 places to the right, or 2.78%.

Think of a penny as being 1/100th of a dollar, or .01, move the decimal to yield 1%. Moving the decimal two places to the right is the equivalent to multiplying by 100.
