2-8-0

I know I know....one more post about the 2-8-0's and someone will crack...however I'll make this short and simple.

I plan on doing a kitbash of a 2-8-0 using the Bachmann 2-8-0, i need to remove the domes...are they sepratly added or molded on? I hope they are sepratly added as I will need one of them.

They are separate pieces, but they are glued in so well, they seem like one piece.

I have read somewhere that a new, sharp #11 X-Acto blade, heated, will make the cutting and removal process much easier if you can't get them off any other way.

One more... is it Easy to remount the headlight on teh engine? I need to change its position to the top of the smoke box.

Remounting the headlight from the outside is pretty straightforward. I've already done that for my ICRR kit bashed conso (basically just installing a more prototypical IC headlight).

I would suggest that your main concern in moving the headlight to the top of the boiler is what is 'inside'. Will the light connection inside move to the new postion. Changing headlights and keeping the same position as I did is pretty easy ... you may run into a few more problems when you change the position ... but I doubt it will be an 'impossible' task.

Sorry to jump in anothers thread but I cannot get anyone to tell me how to remove the smoke box front on a Spectrum 4-4-0 engine to access the headlight terminals. I tried Bachmanns via the site twice and twice by snail mail. I think I tried some weeks ago. Maybe one of you has done this before.

I have tried quite a few times. The edge of the smoke box front starts to bend and will break off if I keep trying. I also asked Bachmann if they carry smoke box front parts but they refuse to answer.
I burnt out the LED so I am not looking for free parts. I will live with it. I am sure customer service has all the business they need. Thanks anyway.

Over the week end I talked to a friend of mine who had the misfortune of having his Bachmann 4-6-0 take a nose dive off his board and hit a concrete floor. While examining it he noticed that the smoke box front had, ever-so-slightly, moved.  There was a small area in which he could insert a thin bladed flat screwdriver and slowly twist-press the smoke box outward.  He pressed out a small section on one side, then moved his screwdriver to an adjacent section, pressed that section out, and went around the entire perimeter of the smoke box several times, forcing out little by little, the front.  Finally, he was able to remove the entire front to expose the light and wiring.

Ouch, that must hurt. Was the damage very bad?

I just tried again and it it came loose. This time I started at the bottom of the smoke box. There is a slight bit of damage but I think I can take care or that. Now I will be able to replace the head light with the older box type. I love it when a plan comes together.

Hello Everyone

if you are not worried about the paint on the locomotive, use Castrol superclean.

this stuff loosens glue, it removes paint from plastic also.

get the one in the antifreeze size jug, then get a small rubber maid container with a lid, one that is 8 inches long.

put the engine body in there after you removed all of the metal parts, let it soak for a day or two and the glue will be loose

remember to wear rubber gloves, this stuff is caustic to metal and skin.

it easily washes off with soap and water

Update on project:

Day 1: removed domes, removed cab, fitted new cab and firebox.

Project is going better then expected.

That looks great! Bachmann here is an excellent idea for the next run of steam engines! Camel Backs are very un-represented. If the Mantuas were re-detailed they would be nice but your 2-8-0 is much more typical of the era.
