I just received a Bachman 1:20.3 LS 2-8-0 narrow gauge loco . It was purchased from one of the larger dealers. When I opened the box and pored through the literature i found a gift certificate that would allow me to purchase at a special price a 2001 Bachman catalogue. Is it safe to assume this loco was mfg in 2001 and is it of current configuration. Were there any inherent problems with this model .
I purchased it as new.

Don,

It may have a loose gearbox,   The 2-8-0 was first introduced in 2001 and the early run did have this problem.   There are many how to articles on the fix for this. At one time it was on this site until the upgrade and I don't know how to get to the archive.  Try the Archive on mylargescale.com as I know it is on that site.

Hopefully someone else with chime in with a more direct link to the fix.  If no one does I may have a written description on how to do it, but no pictures.  I will send it to you if no one else chimes in.
