Long Island RR Loco/Cars

I live in the Long Island area of New York, and can't seem to locate a Long Island RR passenger train set.  Atlas makes LIRR diesel loco and caboose.  Where would I be able to find LIRR pieces in a commuter train set (will buy loco and coaches separately if required)?

LIRR is not as well known as BNSF, CSX, NS, or UP.

IHC may have some heavyweights for the LIRR "Cannonball".

You didn't mention what era you are modeling. In the 50s, the LIRR had Alco and FM locomotives. Later they went to MP-15 switch engines and the MTA also supplied GP-38s. They also operated recently (until about 5 years ago) F7s and Alco FAs as booster units.

There are some PRR coaches you could use in a train. I once (40 years ago) rode in a coach that had been run on the Soo Line (you could see the lettering under the LIRR paint.)

I haven't seen the Atlas caboose but I doubt it is authentic.

For steam, a Bowser G-5 would be correct.

Don't expect to find much RTR stuff.

Canadian (Yes, Canadian) Model Trains carries True Line Trains which produces a beautiful Alco C-liner for the LIRR with the large billboard numbers on the nose.  I bought one and it runs like a charm.

there trainman line is releasing a GP-38 soon

a few years back life like proto2000 had a l.i.r.r. gp38

and broadway limited is releasing  the FA  in L.I.R.R.

Walthers offers an inexpensive FA for the Long Island.  The C-Liner with the billboard numbers on the nose is, in my opinion, the signature diesel locomotive of the LIRR after the Pennsy built G5s 2-6-0.  For passenger cars I painted several undec. Athearn heavyweight coaches gray and they fit the bill rather nicely.  I don't know if Athearn still makes the HW passenger coaches.  I've found them hard to get.
