Okay...I'm up running...Now...Converting to DCC

Even with my new basic kid's sets....grinch and Thomas....can I convert them easily to DCC?
I would like to move them around independently.

If you
   • can put back together what you have taken apart
   • have basic DCC knowledge
   • can properly use multimeter
   • can follow instructions included with decoder
   • have good soldering skills
   • have the necessary tools

then this will give you an idea of what is involved for decoder installation

as for the Grinch diesel

Bach-man which DCC on Board diesel will the Grinch shell fit? Swap will be easier than a decoder installation and only a little more money.

Of course, you need a DCC system you know how to use to control the decoders.

good advice from hunt. If I can add some other thoughts with DCC decoders.

Will the engines in question have room for a decoder? most people install them in the tender with steam engines.

If your not good with electrical wireing and taking things apart you can likely find someone local who can do the install for you for a reasonable price.

I have installed decoders in several of the Thomas series engines.  Thomas, James, Percy, and Emily.
Thomas, and Percy are easy. their tops (cab) pop off and their is plenty of room for a decoder.  James requires more taking apart, but has room for a decoder as well.  Emily was a real pain, and almost no room. I put in a digitrax DZ123 decoder just above the front wheels. However I have blown a decoder in emily.  Not sure why.  Have replaced it. 

I have also installed decoders in SD40 Bachmann engines of various road names with no problem. There seems to be room right on top and you can tape the decoder to the logic board.

But as advised, none of these engines have had decoder plugs in them. This means, cutting wires, soldering, and keeping track of all those darn little screws.  My kids really love running the Thomas engines  on our railroad and having individual control. DCC is so nice!  Easy for the kids to use with multiple trains.
