I need to scratch build a new roof for a building.  The roof is the type where it slopes up to the peak from all four sides, at about the same angle.  Does anybody know the formula for figuring the size of each piece - which would be trapezoids on the long side and  triangles on the short side?

That is a Hip Roof.

You can forgo all the geometry and trigonometry by making a scale drawing of the side walls of the structure with roof outline as if you were using a Gable roof. You can then use the drawing to make a 3-D template using cardstock for the hip roof .

Thanks.  Actually I left out the name because in doing some checking, I found the style has a couple of names, all variations of "hip" IIRC.  I figured perhaps it was a regional dialect - like the bayou in Louisiana and the run in Virginia.
