If you plan to only run DC, it's a fair value. I would probably pay the extra $12 and get the DCC model, but it's your money.

What radii curves are you using? Bigger isn't better... SD's are a stretch to get around 18, and even 22" curves. If you want a good deal, buy the Proto 2000 GP38-2's from Walthers... They are on sale right now for 45$ each.

What are you trying to model?  That should be the first consideration.  For me, that is way beyond my era so I wouldn't think twice about not buying it.  But it were a N&W J - which is wonderful locomotive - I would not buy it because while it fits my era, it doesn't fit my location.

Since I'm a P2k fan, I prefer more pulling power, better drive, and much more detail for 5$ less, - a decoder...

Forget what everyone else tellls you. There has been only one perfect locomotive ever produced, and it only costs $21.98. Kind of hard to find, but tracking down one of these babies is worth it... ;)

I think you would be a lot happier with this one. Spend a few bucks on a decent transformer also. remember there are two kinds of modelers here. the real serious guys and the guys that are not so serious ( mix and match roadnames ) . i am the latter and I think you are also. I am about ready to plunk some money down on an SD40 from bachmann and runn Dc ( it is DCC ready )

Cody, remember service after the sale is very importatnt.  Whatever brand you buy, ask if they have a life time warranty.  Ask the dealer if they will refund your money if the loco arrives defective, or goes bad in just a few days running.

You might also ask them if you can return it after it arrives, if you don't like it for whatever reason.  There are still a few dealers who believe the customer is always right.
