I hijacked a thread with info about railroads in my area so I started a new thread.
Here is a good link to maps with railroad line information.
The one that came through Easthampton, MA was the NY, NH & Hartford Railroad.
It started in CT, came up through Southwick MA, Westfield, MA, Easthampton, MA and Northampton, MA. Much of the line was constructed along side a canal that started in Windsor Locks, CT and ended in Northampton bypassing a couple dams and rapids. On the North side of Easthampton, a branch of the Boston & Maine connected to the B&M in the North side of Holyoke, MA along the CT River.
It is partially Rail Trail now from the center of Easthampton to the North side of Holyoke at Rt 5. The old B&M section is still in use by Guilford Transportation. Springfield Terminal Railway Co. delivers coal to the Mt Tom power plant along the CT River on the North side of Holyoke.. Freight still moves through the area. Not sure about Amtrak.

I thought the Canal Line went all the way up to Shelburne Falls?
Gilfidd's Conn River has the local, and the coal trains which P&W brings up. Amtrash's Vermonter goes over CSX to Palmer, and then up to Vermont on the NECR, rather than PAR to East Deerfield, then over to Millers Falls, and up to Vermont on NECR from there.

Here is a link to the canal info. It started in New Haven. I thought it started in Windsor Locks as I have seen the connection point on the CT River. The Westfield Library has a model of what the canal looked like in Westfield. I believe there was also a turning basin. The canal only lasted about 12 years.
I know at the Congamond Lakes ice was cut during the winter and transported in box cars packed in saw dust.
