I myself have created quite a few projects, for those who do not already know me, i am known as Henry on the MTF board, and so far, have made a number of new models using exisiting locos and have scratchbuilt my latest creation using only plasticard and components from other spare projects.

Thomas sure is right, & I just painted a diecast truck for my 18 Wheeler Death buster Truck.

Here's an easy one: adding coal to a troublesome truck.

You kinda have to look down on the picture to see the coal. My camera's dumb.
Here's what you do:

  • Cut two pieces of cardboard the relative size of the car, then one that fits perfectly in there.
  • Paint the perfect one black. Place the cardboard in the car, with the black one on top.
  • Sprinkle scale-sized coal into the car. Spray the coal with a 50:50 mixture of 70% isopropyl alcohol and water until the coal is well-saturated.
  • Add Scenic Cement or the white glue/water mixture with an eye dropper until you can see it between the coal pieces. Let it dry for a while, and make sure it doesn't fall. (I learned this the hardway, twice!)
  • Weather it to make it look like it's been used a lot.
  • Enjoy! (WARNING: Do NOT skip this step. It is the most important!)

I dunno if it's permanent, but whatever. I like it the way it is and I want a whole train of them, so it works out for me. Trust me, it looks better in real life, the picture just came out kinda bad, even though I used the right modes.  ;)

Did you copyright that procedure? No? I didn't think so. :l

Not bad, but the coal seems a bit "flat."

I know, I'm going to get more cars and do different levels of coal to give it variety.

P.S. I never saw any of your hopper cars, and putting coal into cars wasn't your idea, so...

Diesel #261

No what I was saying is that I used that idea.  I wasn't claming it as mine.  Besides anyone can cut cardboard and stick coal on it then lay it in their cars. :)

Bluenose was made from an 8F 2-8-0 tender engine, the face is made of plaster, using the same method as Knuckles from the MTF board.

The same procedure should also work for gravel and sand loads.  I've had the same idea for a long time, but since I don't have a layout, I think it's a waste of time right now.
