Spectrum Tsunami Locomotives

How do you activate sounds from a Spetrum Tsunami steam locomotive in DC/analog?  Can you hit the reverse button for a second to sound the whistle, or do you need one of those controllers that clips in between the power pack and the rails, or operates by radio control?
