QuoteThe Erie P-1 tiplex, the Matt H. Shay. Only 3 built between 1914 and 1916. It was built to carry 640 50 ton cars the problem was that the couplers on the cars in the 20's couldn't hold that weight and it only went up to 10 mph.

Technically there was only one Matt H. Shay..your quote reads like there were three of them.

yes, there were three Erie P1 2-8-8-8-2 triplexes, but only the first one was named Matt H. Shay, the other two were un-named.

and they could go faster than 10 mph.

and its Triplex, not Tiplex.

Scot, being literal for the sake of historical accuracy.

FWIW, the Virginian also had a Triplex, built to the same design, but with a 4-wheel trailing truck at the back of the tender.  It fared no better than the Erie engines, and was eventually turned into 3 Mikados.

You are supposed to wait until the last one is done before posting a new one.
yours is Linville River Railway #1, a Shay locomotive built by the Lima Locomotive Works and completed on November 9, 1904.

It is an existing/surviving Shay, currently on display Goshen, Virginia.
The owner is looking for cylinders to restore it...its original cyliners are gone, because it was converted to diesel power at one time!

Back to the little Saddletanker on the last page, which is still in play.

I know all that for a fact. And thanks for noticing that typo.
