K-27 question

In reading the original review of this engine in Garden Railways, it mentions a fan in the engine compartment above the motor.  What exactly is this fan there for?  Can't imagine needed motor cooling, but maybe? Or for smoke chuffing?  Is it always on?  I know the C-19 has one in the tender, which I assume is for circuit board cooling.  Does the K-27 also have a fan in the tender?

Fan was to cool the motor...

Nothing to do with chuff, and sometimes it interferes with smoke, sucking the smoke back into the boiler... in that case, reverse the fan (physically)

I don't think the K27 has a fan in the tender, but if you look at the schematic on my site, you will see there was a provision for a second fan on the circuit board.

That fan would be to help cool the decoder.

Thanks. I see that on your site.  I like to learn as much as I can before I start a job.

yeah, I do the same!

I see I need to add more to the k27 pages... I'll add some more... looks like the documenting of the motherboard needs doing...

TOC is sending me a motherboard, and I'll document the solder pads for hardwiring, and possibly installing a bank of screw terminals like they should have.
