N scale dcc engine 1361 Bachmann stutters when going forward but not in reverse

DCC engine 1361 n scale will stutter intermittently when going forward but not when in reverse. If I turn off the chugging option the train runs smooth going forward. I would like to use the sound effects but can't figure out the cause. Any help would be appreciated.
