I have a new digit track controller to use for DCC and possibly DC. Is it safe to use on my older DC engines? Will it cause damage to them? The engine hums when it's placed on the track is this normal?

The humming is normal. And while it can be done with a Digitrax system, there is a risk of motor damage operating a DC locomotive on a DCC layout. In particular, do not do this if the loco has a brushless motor.

I suggest you read this, including the links provided in the document, before attempting it...

If at first you don't succeed, throw it in the spare parts box.

That humming you hear generates heat in the motor. While running, the rotation of the motor helps keep it cool. But when the motor is still there is no way to dissipate that heat. Do not let your locomotives sit and hum. Either park them on a track you can electrically isolate when not using them, or remove them from the layout completely.
