I hate to say it, but the broken off vertical plastic pieces sounds like piece I mentioned, and gave a link for, in my first response. If Bachmann is sold out, there's not much you can do with it.

Thanks.  I did look up the F7, F9, and FT chassis, but none of the ones available had the part of the chassis that holds the wheels.

I just found an entire Santa Fe Bachmann engine for sale for 25 bucks, so am hoping I can get it.

I cant say thank you enough for all of your help, and your patience with me--a newcomer.
