Problems with N scale Thomas then same with Percy.

I bought by son the n-scale Thomas with Anne and Clarabell starter set for Christmas. Thomas appeared to be sluggish right out of the box then stopped working all together. He lasted about 6 minutes. All track pieces have the correct voltage. I ordered Percy and he did the same thing. Has anyone else ran into this issue with the n-scale Thomas line?
