Ho Dewitt Clinton brushes

I have removed the brush holders from my Dewitt Clinton.  Question is this.  Brushes are rigid within the holders.  Are they supposed to be free to move in and out on the springs?  Thanks

I remember mine moved with the springs but it has been many years.

If the springs will not slide out they have probably gotten hot and melted into the plastic.

Dig them out. clean the hole with a file and replace the springs.
