I am looking for information about the prototype of the Baldwin 4-6-0 Southern #1087.  There are many listings for a railroad using the name "SOUTHERN" in combination with other names.  I would like to know the actual railroad and time period for this locomotive. I found a  listing for a "COLUMBIA SOUTHERN" railroad in Oregon, but cannot tell is that is the railroad of the prototype.  There was also a "SOUTHERN" railroad in the South that I believe had a terminal at Columbia, SC.

Thank you.  I checked out the site.  I found a wealth of interesting information and photographs relevant to both history and modeling.

Here's another site to look at:  http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/steam/460/460.html
The Southern painted quite a few locos intended for passenger service in the "Apple Green" scheme.  More well-known are the Pacifics and Mountains, but they also had some Ten-Wheelers and Americans done as well.  Pacific No. 1401 is stuffed and mounted in all its green and gold glory within the Smithsonian's American History museum in Washington, DC.

The low boilered 4-6-0 is a Maryland & pennsylvania prototype, typical of ca. 1900 practice modified with outside walschaerts valve gear added at a later date.  It is a typical catalog standard engine bought by many short lines. The Yazoo & Mississippi Valley, later absorbed by the IC, had several almost identical.

This is a great website.  All of the engines are interesting but scroll down to the 4-6-0s and you'll find none that resemble the Bachmann model.

Yes. the hawkinsrails.net, below, is a great site.  I found  a photo of Southern #1092, identifying the locomotive as part of the F-14 CLASS including #'s 1085 to 1112, built from 1911 to 1914, and all retired by 1947.  Further exploration of the site leads to additional technical characteristics of the locomotives in the F-14 CLASS. Highly informative. Thank you.

The site above, http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/steam/460/450.htmi   provided by ebtnut, has photos of 11 of the locomotives in the F-14 CLASS including #1087, the prototype I have been searching for.  I wonder how and why Bachmann selected that locomotive to model.

Ma and Pa engines have been popular for close to 60 years as prototypes to model, their 2-8-0 and the very same ten wheeler Bachmann chose being offered in brass way back then.  I had one of them. The Bachmann Richmond 4-4-0 is supposedly a Ma and Pa engine too.  I wondered why prototypes from an obscure eastern shortline were chosen until I realized that they all are very close to standard catalog engines of the period, suitable more or less for many other roads.  They all are very nice engines, I have several of each.
