I'm new to HO train layout. How do I calculate the length of an incline in relation to it"s height?  In other words, I want to go to a height of 3 3/4 inches. How long should the incline be?

SteamGene

You don't want to exceed 2% if possible.  Try 1/4 inch a foot.  That would be fifteen feet.

Thanks Steamgene, appreciate.

Gene;
You do plumbing too?

  I too, usually try not to exceed 1/4 inch per foot.  I think the toughest part of that whole thing is the transitions to the incline.  How do you approach that?

Rich,
My plumbing is handyman at best, though I did replace a toilet once.  :D  I try to make the first rise less than 1/4 inch to the foot and maybe do a little fudging later on.  All of beginning climbs are in and I've experienced no problems beginning a climb.  I have one climb yet to finish, but it shouldn't be a problem.  I'd be finished if it weren't for this very nice curved viaduct holding up progress.
