#5 turnout

I ordered a couple of #5 turnouts from this site and they arrived a few days later.  That's great. BUUUUUUTTTT! Yes, there is a but, the problem is I can't seem to get 2 pieces of track to attach to the two ends of the turnout at the same time.  It appears the is a section that needs to be cut like on the standard turnouts.  I'm not sure what the short piece is for but attaching that didn't help either.

What am I doing wrong?  I'm sure it's me.  If the answer is 'brute force' I'll rethink my 'plan'.  Brute force and I do NOT mix.

Turn the turnout over and you will see a score mark. Using a pair of pliers, break the plastic off along the score, and all will fit properly. Happy railroading!- Mike S.
