EZ-track turnouts in series

I've bought a pair of EZ-track#4 turnouts (parts 44557 and 44558).  The instructions seem to indicate that the controllers can be connected in series by pushing them together.  But this seems next to impossible.  The female jack is a bit recessed and the slots are rather small, and it's hard to see how to get the male leads into the slots.  Any suggestions?

(The controllers don't quite look like the diagram on the back of the package, which shows two external jacks.)
