The length of the track should not make any real difference. Did you unplug/re-plug the hand control cable? Maybe it was making a poor connection when you experienced your problems.  ??? Glad it was not your motive power.

Agree with Joe, length of track was not the problem, but glad things worked out.  I did not believe it was the locomotive from the start.  Since you do not know what you did to "fix" things, if it happens again, start with the track, controller, and power pack when troubleshooting.
