I have a older bachmann  spectrum K4 that stopped moving forward or reverse. It is a non DCC engine. I have power to the light. It is a split frame engine. I removed the boiler . I am thinking a gear cracked. I removed the screws on the bottom plate hoping I could see something. The plate will not come off. Any suggestions on how to proceed? I have the diagram from HOseeker but do not know where to go next.Thank you in advance.

Even the later version of the K4 is discontinued.

I think in some situations with Older Loco's it's not worth investing the money to fix them up with newer decoders on the market or the problems that can pop up installing new decoders into Older Loco's made back in the days the Locos chassis & body's where more narrow & made it hard to install the speakers for the sound....

I have a Older (non-Bachmann) PA-1 Loco it was given to me by a Friend it was a DC Powered Loco So I had a heck of a time finding a Decoder & the Train Shop I took it too had a hard time locating a decoder for it... Well we found one I believe it's an older MRC decoder. The train Tech had some trouble installing the decoder but managed costed me a little more in labor fee's. I wanted Sound too but there was no place to fit a speaker. What I spent on the DCC decoder & labor to have it installed I could of gotten a newer PA-1 with DCC & Sound... Witch I did 2 months later & my new PA-1 even has smoke with it & wish I would of done that in the 1st place instead of the money I spent on my older PA-1...

Thank you all for your replies.  I thought I came across a site a while back on another project that sold replacement wheels with gears for older engines. Anyone know of it?

HoModeler, who said anything about fitting it with a decoder ??? All the OP was asking about was how to get it moving again ::)

If you can't get the bottom plate off even with all the screws you can find removed, check to see if it's glued on or if maybe the plastic melted over a screw (Yes, that can happen, and it is super-annoying).

I believe it was North West Short Line that offers wheelsets that can be put to this task, but don't buy until you've got the loco fully open and confirmed what's wrong.
