I picked up a unlettered HO scale 2-8-4 and are there decals for this locomotive?

RAM

yes. . but not from Bachmann.

You can purchase any decals you like from various sources such as Champ, or you can print your own if you have an ALPS or other compatible printer and the decal sheets.

Does anyone know What exactly does this model represents in terms of real locomotives?     I heard once that is was C&EI or L&N - don't remember which one.  Neither of those were any interest so I avoided this thing.

The Bachmann model that's currently cataloged is the Nickel Plate Road version.

This was a standard Van Sweringen (financial group) Advisory Mechanical Committee (AMC, a joint design bureau for the associated Van Sweringen roads) 2-8-4, which was based on the larger Chesapeake & Ohio T-1 2-10-4 (which was also an AMC locomotive).  This design, with minor modifications (which were often only cosmetic), would be used by NKP, Wheeling & Lake Erie, Pere Marquette, Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac, C&O, and Virginian Railway--quite a spread, even if it is all eastern and midwestern lines.
