Don't!  Smoke units, nasty little things.  Unrealistic and spread oily crap over your track and scenery.

My opinion, of course.

@rogertra,
Please re-read the op.
I perceive, that he is asking about wiring a smoke unit in a chimney, of some type, or other stationary building kit.
To simulate activity, no?
Not in a moving lokie.
Can you assist him in wiring this smoke device?
I do not believe he asked for opinions, but was rather requesting technical advice.
Have you any to offer?

@TERRYINTEXAS,
It's two wires,
If DC, then one +, and the other –.

If AC,
does not matter.

Can you post the technical data of that "standard smoke unit"?

I would also suggest that a simple on/off switch be wired into the + lead (if DC) or either lead (if operating on AC). Smoke units have been known to overheat and melt things when operated without smoke oil in them.

If you do any other 'smoking' buildings, I suggest you use a Seuthe smoke unit. The model 117f is specifically for buildings, and Seuthe units are designed to turn off the smoke fluid runs out. You'll still want an on/off switch, and possibly a timer.

If at first you don't succeed, throw it in the spare parts box.
