If you spray paint the plywood before you do anything else, you won't have to mask anything except everything in the area that you don't want covered with overspray.
Since you asked, I'd visit the local big box or paint store and look for mismixed paint in some shade of light to medium tan or brown latex wall paint.  Typically, it can be had for ~$5/gallon.  There will be a LOT left over for touchup and scenery painting further on during construction.

It may be OK with your landlord to spray paint outside. Don't breathe any paint fumes. Don't get any paint on the carpet, walls, windows etc.  Don't use any enamel or "rustoleum" type paints. Be sure the paint works with the surface you are paining!

Your safety & health is your first concern. The second concern is how you house or store the stuff for later use.  Water based acrylics are the best.

Spray paint most likely will be far too expensive. Mike's suggestion about the mismixed or closeout paint is a good one. Many paint stores also sell small sample paint in a tryout container.

If you are painting with a specific color you should use spray paint. If you mix paint and brush it on it is hard to keep the whole thing consistant. If you want to take a different approach, try using the big grass sheets.

wood will soak up so much spray paint that you will have to buy almost twice as much as you think you'll need.

I agree with Mike and Glenn.

Cheap latex wall paint with a brush.

2 coats on all surfaces, including the edges.

Preferably a shade of brown or green.
