Is the installation of a dcc decoder in the HO Acela Express :loco plug and play?  What decoder would you recommend?

Yes, there's an 8-pin socket to install a decoder. Very little space between the socket and the top of the body shell, so a decoder with a short wiring harness to an 8-pin plug is needed. Several manufacturers make decoders that will work in this loco. The real trick is getting the shell off without damaging it.

A DZ126PS is quite small with the eight pin plug. Short harness with plug. Size 11.56mm x 9.37mm x 3.2mm

I have used the little older DZ125PS.
