Remove shell on amtrak cars

I have the amtrak centennial set with cars with lighted interiors.  This is the less expensive set and not the acela one.  I want to remove the passenger car shells so that I can get to the interior of the cars.  I'be tried just expanding the shell and the let the bottom fall out but this doesn't seem to work.  How do I remove the shell?
