Getting ready to modify my IHC Presidental pacifics, I can only do one right this minute as I only have one number plate for the smoke box. But my main question for you is. When I go to repaint the smoke box after I modify it should I use, grey, or Black? right now it's got grey, but I found a photo of one of em with a black smoke box and I have to say I like the look of it. but at the same I like the grey

My suggestion would be to look at photos of the engine(s) in actual service and see what colour the smokebox was painted back then.   As this is an exhibit loco, so who knows how accurate the paint is?

Yes, the photos of these engines in service will more than likely be black and white but you should still be able to tell the smoke box colour, or at least get a really good idea.

Best of luck with the project and do post photos when done.

Cheers.

Problem with these engines is that they wore several colors while in service, dark blue, black, green(as seen above) and one was painted with a white boiler and black smoke box. The engine no longer sports the black smoke box but is green except the smoke box door which is a bluish grey. since the museum was still under B&O Ownership at the time of the photo i'm sure it wore that at one point.

Welp, here she is, B&O 5311 President Filmore in her changed up form. Still want to get a better bell.

B&O 5311 "President Filmore" and B&O 5314 "President Lincoln" Both are IHC's. I think the Lincoln was kitbash at the IHC warehouse of spare parts as it doesn't have the stripped wheels like the Filmore, and has the same number on the tender as Filmore. Also if you look at the Lincoln it has a silver instead of grey smoke box...anyway back to the reason of the post. I modified the Filmore to look more like a B&O P7. with just the addition of the capital dome in the front and chaning the headlight position sure made a ton of difference to the engine as you can see below. Lincoln will get the same treatment when I get some more smoke box number plates. and Both will get new bells once I get to another train show in about a month. I may do my Semi Streamlined Pacific as well.

All I did was repaint the smoke box and handrails, rest was factor painted. and what a fitting backdrop for Memorial Day Weekend eh?

Here's a photo of 5302 from the 1930's in the original scheme.  The smokebox area looks to have been finished in what we often refer to as "graphite and oil".  This was fairly typical for B&O power.

Wheres the photo?

And I never thought it ever did, but I seen a photo of the President Washington in the popular reproduced HO scale version of it in the blue and grey. Just can't remember where I saw it.

Sorry, got distracted by a phone call and didn't hit the Paste.  Here's the link:  http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/bo5302s.jpg

I doubt that there are any in-service color pics of the P-7's in the original olive green paint.  I think they all got painted Royal Blue in the 1930's.  Many got rebuilt into P-7d's with the lagged smokebox and centered headlight.  I believe all of them remained in blue paint until retirement.

I googled B&O Presidental Pacifics, and oddly enough a photo came up with one appearing to have a green boiler and black smoke box while in service. hard to tell since its black and white.
