HO scale (1:87.1), 40 ft box car NMRA recommended car weight is 3.75 ounces

Additional car weight = 2.75
   40 x 12 = 480
  480 x 0.5 = 240
  240 / 87.1 = 2.75

Initial weight = 1
   2.75 + 1 = 3.75

Four ounces is just fine. The NMRA recommendation for HO is one ounce plus a half-ounce for every inch of length. Since 40T box cars are right about six inches long, four ounces is the solution (1 + [6 X .5] = 1 + 3 = 4).

A HO scale  40' box car should be right at 5.5" not 6" long.

40 x 12 = 480
480 / 87.1 = 5.51 inches

However Bill, compute the weight your car should be per NMRA using the actual length of your model.
