After rereading your post on the best way to lube the spectrum 2-8-0 got to wondering if you had the Bachmann 2-6-6-2 and had ever attempted to lube it using the same method ?
actually had the boiler off mine for a bit of kitbashing but didn't even think of this at the time.

GN 2-6-8-0,

Don't own one, yet.  It would be a wonderful starting point for a B&O KK-4b or the like.  Got wrapped around the axle with brass for a while.  Timonium train show is coming up in a few weeks.  Perhaps I'll run across one and get the urge to tinker. 

I have opened up my EM-1s.  They seem to have a drive system similar to the 2-6-6-2, from what I gather in the diagrams.  The EM-1s had so much lube, I spent a lot of time wiping out the insides to get rid of the excess. I did lift off the caps on the worm gears just to check.  They were lubed quite well.

I've got two, haven't had to lube em yet. They are still quiet as a mouse and I've had em a few years. (They've also seen little run time)
