My Bachmann Alco S4 with the stock DCC w/sound decoder (Soundtraxx), will accept CV changes in the OPS mode.  I have successfully made changes to accel/brake/whistle/bell etc.  It refuses to accept a CV 1 address change ( 2 digit ).  I also tried changing in DIR mode.  I reset CV 36 to "c" and tried the above steps again.  Same result.  I really don't want engine address as   " 3 " forever.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Address Programming Restriction

Independent of the DCC command station being used –
When using Mainline Programming (Ops Mode) a SoundTraxx decoder will not allow you to change the type of address currently in use. In other words, it will not permit a change from a short address to another short address or from a long address to another long address. The workaround for this restriction is covered in the documentation. This restriction does not apply when using a Service mode.

This SoundTraxx decoder address programming restriction is covered in
http://www.soundtraxx.com/factory/OEM_pages/bachmann/bachmann_with_dcc.pdf
http://www.soundtraxx.com/manuals/Tsunami%20Diesel%20Technical%20Reference_1.13.pdf
http://www.soundtraxx.com/manuals/tsutechreference.pdf

There are other programming restrictions that come into play when programming the decoder's address using Service mode depending on the DCC command station being used.

Thank you for the quick reply Hunt.  I guess I was lulled into thinking a change of CV1 would be simple because my Mantua 2-6-6-2 w/MRC decoder had no such restriction.  Being new to this DCC stuff, I wasn't aware of this.  Too late tonight to read the links, but rest assured I'll be all over it tomorrow .  Thanks again, Dave

The Sound Value SoundTraxx Bachmann OEM decoder factory installed in the Bachmann HO S4 diesel is not a Tsunami decoder but there is very little documentation written directly for the Sound Value decoder.  Some features, for example – the addressing restriction, are the same. Where the features are the same in the Sound Value and a Tsunami decoder you can use the SoundTraxx Tsunami documentation for details and how-to.

Click Here for a PDF of the Bachmann HO ALCO S4 Sound Value Equipped Configuration Variable Defaults. Use this CV list as an index for looking up feature detail instructions in some of the SoundTraxx documentation written for the Tsunami decoder. This does have some drawbacks but it is what is available.

Thanks again Hunt for the valuable info.  I did get the address changed thanks to you.  I guess because Bachmann used the terms "Sound-Traxx Digital Decoders" all over their guide I mistakenly assumed it was Tsunami. Thanks for the CV listing. Dave
