You don't need expensive power packs, boosters, decoders.  You don't have current running to all locomotives on the layout, even if they are parked.

And if you're the sort of person who can't even set the clock on the VCR DVD player, you don't have to deal with installing decoders in locomotives.

That's true.  The slide switches on the Atlas Selectors are very much like (and probably patterned after) the slide switches on first and second generation EMD locomotives.
Fuel pump, generator field, cab lights, etc.

Diesel locomotives have all sorts of electrical switches to throw, mostly slide switches, rotary switches to a lesser extent, and a few push buttons for good measure.
