GP38 lasted 1 day

I bought a CSX GP38-2 DCC on board for my son and tested it and it worked, the next day he went to run it with a Bachmann transformer and he said it sparked and smoked and now it hums but does not move.  Other trains work on his track.  I put it on my Digitrax layout and it shorts the digitrax and shuts it off.  What could be the cause?

Both layout DCC? Sounds like your sons may be DC.

short circuit. open it up and see if you can find out where.

his is DC.  if I take it apart, will I void the warranty?  Is it something I could repair?

Opening the loco won't void the warranty but working on it might.
So I suggest that you go ahead and open it for a diagnosis. Then
fix it if you can and send it back to Bachmann if you cannot. Good

Sound like the motor got fried or the decoder. Look for discoloration on the decoder.  Joe

Sounds like the decoder got smoked' send it back to Bachmann for replacement.
