Painting rolling stock

I am wanting to paint some boxcars, but don't know how good they come out.  Don't want to weather them right now, just change their colors.  Is this a mistake to spray paint them or do they take paint well.  Worried about chipping and/or nicks.  Do they need any special prep like light sanding or primers?  Once painted, should they be clear coated?
