I know the reading consolidation from the earlier pre-spectrum years had the screaming pancake motor or the white box motor but when it entered the plus series, wasn't it outfitted with a plus style can motor because I've seen under the hood of some of these engines and some of them had a stock can motor...

Yes you are correct. The first Reading 2-8-0 had the pancake or slotcar motor but the "Plus" version drivetrain was updated to a can style motor that ran ten times better. The thing to check for, if you are intending to purchase one, is that the platic axles and gears are in good shape and not cracked.
