Where did you see this?
I live in Western, MA, Pan Am RR country, called the Patriot Corridor and see a NS once in a while. Both companies are linked.
The rails though my area are being upgraded to double track for the Amtrak, Vermonter.

that research slug is not actually a locomotive, but contains the instrumentation for measuring forces related to the track which are read in the passenger car that travels with the train. i am not exactly sure of its capabilities, but it is something along the lines of the doodlebugs that sperry uses.
