Can someone tell the use of the I/O port on the control center?  Can it be used with a laptop?

The  I/O port allows you to hook up a walk around companion. It is basically another controller. When I had my command center I had a walk around companion on the other end of my layout.

Can someone tell me the difference in the 44901 and the current 44902. Is the 44901 DCC?
