Engine Identification.

I have found several engines at garage sales. With no I.D. with them, is there a way I can identify them?  Yes, am new at this, am reading lots, but best help has come from real people, lol. Hope to hear there is a silhoutte guide like the one one airplane or ship spotters used. I know, best of luck. Thanks for the help a lot of you have given me on other topics.
