Are you asking this because you do not have any track or power pack/throttle?
Have you determined that it is DC? Most like as it was at ST. Paul Vincent thrift store and $12.00 it is DC.
If so you can use a 9 volt battery to teas it. Just put one terminal on a wheel one side and the other terminal on the wheel on the other side.
If the motor is good and there is no debris in the workings the motor should turn.

You know Ken that was a really good tip about using a 9 volt battery. I have always used an inexpensive power pack and a few pieces of track. However its not too expensive to purchase a used power pack and an oval of track. We sell used power packs for about $3.00 and track would probably sell for about 50 cents per piece.

I do have one really good MRC DC power pack and some cheaper ones also.
The battery thing is for that quick, lets see if it works, kind of testing.  ;D

If any more needs to be done then out would come one of the power packs and a piece of flex track
