If anyone out there has seen the T.V. show "The Big Bang Theory" you probably know that Sheldon like trains and on the season premier Sheldon bought  a train set and it was the "Rail King" set. I was thinking WOW. I thought that it was ironic that he bought a Bachmann train set. Just wanted to share.

I don't remember any trains on last weeks episode.

Yes, it did, though I couldn't help but notice that once again, model railroad hobbyists were made the butt of jokes. Apparently the people who write this stuff consider us an easy target. I'd also be willing to bet that they've never picked up an issue of Model Railroader or another hobby publication that featured photos of some of the truly amazingly detailed models and layouts that have been created by some of the true artists in the hobby.

Remember, this is a sitcom... everything and everybody will be the subject for amusement.

Instead of trains, insert stamp collecting or any other enthusiast's activity.

My wife was laughing to her core, especially the dire need to get to a train show!  I can see the humor in it. ;D

Don't take it personally. The writers are just trying to make a living. And besides, which would you rather be, a brilliant model railroader or a mouth breathing Joe-full-case-at-a-time slobbering on himself while he watches pornography on his VHS?

Sadly, there ARE people out there who dress up in engineer's hats and wear vests plastered in badges and actually do this in public, as you can see at many a model railroad exhibition and at line side festooned in camera gear.  No wonder we are the butt of (deserved) jokes.  My wife has strict instructions to shoot me should I EVER dress up and look like your quintessential foamer.

Didn't somebody famous once say that any publicity is good publicity?

The program doesn't depict model railroaders as homicidal maniacs, or even trainicidal crashers.  If you are too busy to laugh at yourself, brother, you are TOO BUSY. Chill out, as the children say.

I thought it was pretty funny, I thought the exchange between Howard and Bernadette really summed it up... it's easy to laugh at someone else's hobby but it's a little bit different when you have a hobby someone else could laugh at.

To each their own,
I fault nobody for their enthusiasm, all hobbies have their lefts and rights, I Build 4X4's into Rock Crawlers, there's always the over the top guy with a $100,000.00 dollar rig that has a paint job like a Circus Wagon and then on the otherside is the budget Wheeler with a rattlecan paint job,  every one makes jokes about one or the other, the point is everybody is having fun and that's what counts.

When I run across someone with an overly dim view of Model rail roaders I always tell about Rod Stewarts Layout and tell them to google it.

What makes you think I did? Just because I commented on it? Maybe you don't care about the public image of your hobby. ...  8)

Well, I have no idea where that came from, but you realize, of course, that's it's possible for someone to be both?  ;)  ;D

Rest assured, that thought crossed my mind. So did the phrase "product placement" when I saw what Sheldon had in the bag.  ;D

Good advice is always welcome. ...  ::)

I think the Big Bang Theory is the best show on TV, and I hoped Sheldon would eventually have a layout.  He always has a few O scale trains on the dresser in his bedroom as well.

Don't take the criticism personally - I just feel they aren't making fun of me, they are making fun of "those guys" at train shows.  If you don't know who I'm talking about, you are one of "those guys."  :)

My wife laughed her butt off during that episode and kept looking over at me - it summed me up perfectly as a rubber gauger, without giving away the one-liners...  :)

On30 for me, N scale for my son.

Not impressed with that either.  Too Disneyesque for my tastes.

I also think we get the Butt of jokes. I get tired of that at school. I also build robots in out robotics club at school and people make fun of that too. I guess that is something that we will just have to get used to. I did manage to get one of my friends to liking trains and that is something funny. If anyone knows about the user "Sly," he is the one. Anyway, I guess we will have to get used to butt jokes. Ha Ha  ;D
