question?

is there such a thing as an automatic lane shifter, where once the train passes the piece then switches to the other leg without someone being there to switch it manually?

if so how do I modify, or buy how much money?

thanks for any input! :)

You can put a train sensor "downstream" from your switch (turnout) so it has a relay throw the switch. The sensor can be passive (light sensitive) or active (generally electronic like for a signal system). Depending on your layout, it's also possible to use a spring switch which will stay thrown for one direction but allow trains to pass through in the opposite direction. The effect is what you seem to be asking, that a train can pass through in the opposite direction, even if the switch is set for the other direction, while leaving the switch positioned for travel to the alternate route. This will not work if what you want is for a train to pass through a switch from the points end but have the next train pass through from the same direction but go to the other route. In that case you'll need a sensor and a relay. This is neither difficult not expensive to do. Good luck with your project. Keep us up to date on your progress.

I have done this using very simple alarm switches the same style you see on a lot of business doors, I use the ones that work from up to an inch away, they are about 1/2 x 1/2' x 2" you can mount them parallel beside the track and hide them with bushes, they are N.O. (Normally Open) you wire them the same as you do a push button to throw your switch, then you place the magnet inside a caboose or other car, the magnets are long enough that they activate the coil on your switch as the car goes by (may not work with a bullet train)
the beauty of this is you can place them on both sides of the track before and after the switch and activate them depending on what side you place the magnet in your caboose/car.

P.S. if your using slow motion switches this wont work without some relays.
