I used a Miniatronics Constant Headlight on a Mantua Mikado.  Everything was prewired.  I was required to connect the headlight lead to the right side pick up on the locomotive.  The other headlight lead was connected to the right side of the motor.  Current has to flow through the headlight circuit before the motor. Polarity is important.

Pay no attention to the weirdness of the locomotive.  It was practice for better projects later on...

It works well.

DC or DCC?
Headlight only or rear light also?
