What is the best sound decoder to add to a Bachmann 2-10-4 (Product #51205) which is already equipped with factory DCC? I have been asked by one of our older club members to refit this loco with sound for him. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Digitrax or MRC decoder preferred.

Thanks in advance for replies.

There is no best, only what works best for you.

Go to the SoundTraxx site and look. A 2-10-4 would be heavy steam.
There is an on going argument over, the SoundTraxx, QSI and LokSound decoder qualities.
I use all three but would recommend the SoundTraxx as that is what Bachmann has in their sound equipped steamers. No, Bachmann does not sell that particular decoder which is a square PC board that plugs into the Bachmann PC board 8 pin connector.
SoundTraxx has the documents for the decoder also.

Contact Litchfield Station. Free shipping over $75.00. You will also need a 9 pin to 8 pin adapter harness to plug into the Bachmann PC board.

The below site under curriculum has details of the SoundTraxx decoders. Take you time and read. You will find out why you need the harness. He use to own Litchfield until he retired.

I looked at the diagram for your loco and it shows a place for the 28mm speaker.

I will add, there are a couple sound decoders, under $100  but I don't know how much you want to spend. They are generic sounds and those who are not rivet counters are happy with them.

Thanks so much. I really appreciate the input.

Will check out and decide what to do.  I know the old feller that I'm doing it for is VERY COST conscious.

Thanks again,
