Logging cars?

Hi all,
I've just purchased a brass two truck shay and I'm looking at getting some cars for her to pull. My question is... what is the difference between the two log cars Bachmann offers? Obviously they are meant for different eras, but what is the physical difference (if any) between them?

The older car has type K brakes, the newer car has type AB brakes.

Click the number to the left of the description to see pictures of each item. You could use the log bunks to turn a standard flat car in to a log hauler.

Rivarossi made a line of really nice ones....they turn up at auction regularly. I have a string of a dozen for my layout.....they perform beautifully and have 9 smaller trees per car, rather than the "old growth" behemoths the Kadee and Bmann cars have.

If you don't like the logs that come with a car, small 'dead fall' branches from area trees make a convincing load. Hit the ends with a course tooth razor saw to simulate the marks of a felling saw. Don't forget to angle one edge to simulate the undercut for controlling the direction of fall.

    That's a great idea Len. I've got some logs that look more like those "Slim Jim" snacks than lumber. So bad I just run the car empty!! I'll get some stick out of the yard and be in business.

Thanks for all the responses. I was aware of the Kadee cars but not the Rivarossi ones. I'm assuming then that the Bachmann log load is easy to remove if I wish to model my own log loads?
