I bought a  used Rivarossi 4-6-4. After running it for about an hour the motor burnt out so I am looking for a new one. I have emailed several places for a replacement and they said they don't have them. I have checked the parts section of this board and found three that could fit. The model numbers of the motors are 2-6-0 Model #565x-3875, 2-6-2 Model #515x-3875 and 2-8-0 Model #H11405. The size of the original motor was 33mm long, 20mm wide and 15mm high. Does anyone have one of these Locos with those motors and do they come close to the size I have listed. Thank you

Bill,

For some reason I cannot open the links that Rich has provided.  Hopefully, I won't duplicate what is listed there.

You got my tinkering juices flowing with your question.  I would be studying how the motor is connected to the worm.  I notice a couple of Bachmann's motors have the worm already attached.  If that is your reason for choosing your motor, I agree with your thoughts.  Otherwise, you would need to get a gear pulling tool (about $15) to remove the worm, and still you would need a way to connect the motor to the worm.

IIRC the Rivarossi Pacifics (4-6-2) used a rubber tube connector.  If the 4-6-4 is the same connector type, I might suggest one of the NWSL motor kits.  They come with the motor, flywheel attached, and some universal connecting parts.  I have only done this once (to a brass loco).  I used the kit with a 32mm X 20mm flat can motor.  That would fit according to your specs.  If the flywheel won't fit, you could purchase the motor and universal parts separately.  Going this route would run you about $45 with shipping.

The advantage to the Bachmann motors are cost, and they have a couple of different configurations available depending on your needs for connecting the motor to the gear(s).  Their motors are good quality from my experience.

To sum up, my concern would be more about connecting possibilities.  The actual size of the motor would be less of a concern.

Just an opinion.

Jonathan

I just clicked n both links in the message and they opened fine for me.

The first is results from a ebay search in HO scale section for Rivarossi motor and the second a Google search for the same.

http://toys.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=Rivarossi+motor&_sacat=19128&_sop=1&LH_PrefLoc=1&_dmpt=Model_RR_Trains&_odkw=&_osacat=19128&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

While some do not want to buy through ebay, I have no problem with it and find a lot of my stuff though ebay and not always model train stuff.

Another nice result is I find useful info about the product and quite often find the item at a better source or at least info on how to use the item.
The Internet is loaded with useful info if you take time to learn on how to search.

To RichG, I searched for about 2 hours and I found many links but no help. Many message boards I found a few people were asking where to find the motors for rivarossi and basically all answers were the same (you can't). I emailed Eurlok.com and they said they don't carry them and did not say where or if they are available. I need the newer motors not the old round ones. I think Jonathan is right in what he said. I asked on this board because Bachmann has a few that I listed that I could possibly use. The motor does not have to have the worm attached like on the original. I will call Bachmann and ask the size of the motors that I listed. At least with Bachmann they do have replacemen tparts. From what I understand with Rivarossi if something breaks you are out of luck. Thanks for the replies.

You did not mention anything about the ebay link so I figured you did not look there.

Below is another ebay link. On fellow, Micro Loco Motion is one that I have bought from.

Also, maybe NWSL. I have bought from NWSL for many years. At the below link, click on the NWSL link. This guy does answer email.

Thanks Richg the first link had a good one that I think will work. The second one I have dealt with before, but I didn't see anything that will work. The last link was the best so I emailed him with my problem. Thanks again
